I come from a community that is heavily involved in the agriculture industry. During my sophomore year of high school I was a part of the Watsonville Area Teens Conserving Habitats program in partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium. In addition to allowing me to explore several areas of research, this program allowed me to travel to different areas of the California central coast. I have been able to see how runoff from agriculture has an impact on the watershed by traveling to different lagoons, rivers, and sloughs throughout the county. I did a year-long group research project with the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Younger Lagoon focusing on how salinity impacts phytoplankton populations. This process gave me opportunities to work in the field, analyze data, and learn how to work in a group setting. I also visited a wastewater treatment plant during my time with the program and was able to learn about how my community is able to recycle wastewater and repurpose it to be used for agriculture. Through my personal travels I have experienced diverse geography and communities in Mexico, Canada, Alaska, and the western half of the United States. I had plans to travel to Costa Rica with Dream Volunteers in the Summer of 2020, but my plans were canceled due to Covid.
The person I would want to live down the hall from in the Global Engineering RAP would be driven by academics, inclusive, and friendly. I want to be surrounded by people who aren’t afraid to ask for help and are willing to help others when needed. Having support from other students within the Global Engineering RAP will help us to accomplish our goals together. As engineering majors, we will have to take rigorous courses and having people who will lend a helping hand will make sure that we are in this together. I would like to live with like-minded people who view their education as a top priority and embrace the differences that make us unique. Living in a group of people who mutually care about success is important to me because we become invested in each other’s education. Creating this cycle of support for each other ensures that we will never be lost at any point of our education. I hope that my neighbors in the Global Engineering would be interested in getting to know others in the RAP and get involved in events that promote building a tight-knit community.
I want to be a part of the Global Engineering RAP so that I can have a better sense of community at CU Boulder. Coming from several states away, I am hoping to feel support from my peers and offer the same to others. Being a part of the Global Engineering RAP will contribute to my educational experience at CU Boulder by successfully preparing me for my professional career. By providing opportunities to collaborate and live with a diverse group of engineers, I will be better prepared for success in a global environment. This will happen through my interacting with different personalities and approaches to engineering. Building relationships with other engineering students in the Global Engineering RAP will make for a safe place to challenge ourselves during our education. This will teach me life skills that will help me as an engineer and as a person. The Global Engineering RAP will help me to continue to develop characteristics such as: leadership, patience, tolerance, team-work, flexibility, and knowing how to be inclusive of other team members. As a resident of the Global Engineering RAP, I plan to be an active participant in social and academic activities. I hope to be available for members of the RAP and collaborate with peers to get the most out of our education. Living and going to school with my classmates will help me feel a stronger connection to my academic experience. In the future, I want to be able to provide students with insight on the Global Engineering RAP and share my experiences with them.
