English (5), Hungarian (5), French (2)
From a young age, I've traveled to Hungary about every other summer to visit my extended family and to immerse myself into the culture of my family's heritage. I was also a member of a Hungarian Folk Dancing ensemble since I was 6, and have even traveled with my mom to Hungarian Folk dance camps every summer in Michigan to get immersed into the culture, which has all been interrupted due to the pandemic. In the summers leading up to the pandemic, I traveled to France and was exposed to its rich history over the course of a few weeks. The following year, while visiting my grandpa in southwestern Hungary, we drove over to Croatia to experience what that country as well.
Being a relatively reserved individual, the person living down the hall from me would ideally be someone who I can easily start a conversation with; someone who can be supportive, but also respect my space when I need it to focus on my work. I can quickly adapt to a person's mood or personality, so having someone with a fun personality would benefit my day-to-day spirit greatly. I also would be excited to learn about their unique and diverse background, to learn what lead them to Boulder and into Engineering. Outside of just schoolwork, it would be interesting to have someone who shares some of my hobbies, such as music production, cars, driving, D&D, computers, and/or gaming. In addition, it would be nice having someone who would be interested in the quintessential Colorado outdoor activities as well, such as mountain biking, hiking, geocaching, and camping. I also have plans to swim for the CU club swim team, so it would be great to have that in common with someone else in the hall.
I would like to be with others who would be interacting in languages that wouldn't be limited to just English. By being around people who's language I may not understand, it will help me to not only improve my context-clue-seeking skills to deduce what someone is trying to communicate, but also to improve the fluency of my own languages in the process. I also wish to contribute to the community by being an active partaker in the themed events and by bringing the Hungarian language to the table, which is arguably one of the more annoying languages to learn. My dad also happens to be an engineer who has often had to travel for extended periods of time to foreign countries where English wasn't the primary language, so I've heard first-hand the benefits of being culturally and linguistically diverse as an engineer out in the field.
