I have lived in New Mexico my whole life. Although I haven’t studied abroad or traveled to places that would necessarily prepare me for Global Engineering, I have thought a lot about engineering opportunities abroad and ways I could learn to help create a more sustainable and equitable world in the future.

New Mexico is a large state with a small population. A lot of it is rural, consisting of ranches, small towns, and Native American communities. Some don't have access to the more modern systems that we take for granted. For example, during the pandemic, it was difficult to get the word about vaccines out to some of these communities, as was getting the actual vaccines distributed throughout the state. This is just one example I have noticed of the significant disparity between the rural areas and my hometown of Santa Fe.

In many places in New Mexico, there is less access to resources that I take for granted such as quality housing, paved roads, fresh food, and even convenient gas stations. I have always been fortunate to have clean drinking water, heat in my home, and an oven to cook with. When I wake up in the morning, I have hot water for my shower and cool water directly from the refrigerator to drink. I have access to a good school, healthy food, and transportation. Many parts of New Mexico aren’t as fortunate, and New Mexico has a small version of the problems that engineers could help solve on a global scale. I look forward to acquiring the tools that the Global Engineering program provides to help explore these issues.
I would like to live down the hall from someone who is supportive and accepting of all cultures and backgrounds, as well as a good friend. My friends from high school work hard in their classes and in their extracurricular activities. We always help each other if one of us is struggling in a certain subject, and we are all stronger by working together. This is an environment that works well for me. I would like to be around someone who will help me to grow as a person in college and who is committed to learning about Global Engineering and the positive impacts it will have.

I would like to live down the hall from someone who is kind and fun to be around. Music is a passion of mine, both as a listener and a performer. I am looking forward to sharing this passion with people of similar interests and learning about their passions. In addition, it is beneficial to be in a place where people come from different backgrounds and have varying opinions for discussions. Even if you disagree, understanding where they come from is important. I hope that this is also the type of person who lives down the hall from me and I hope I can be the same for them.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP so I can focus on the potential community impact of a product or system instead of solely focusing on how to build a product or system. With my career in engineering, I want to learn how to make the world more sustainable and equitable. I feel the Global Engineering RAP will help me to become a more well-rounded person and think in a way that considers everything and everyone affected by a project.

I completed two Spanish courses in high school and have since been doing Duolingo every day. Though I am not very advanced in Spanish, my goal is to become more fluent. I would like to be able to speak Spanish to better connect with people in my home state of New Mexico and around the world. Traveling is something I really enjoy. A chance to be able to travel abroad while continuing to learn and work on my degree sounds like an amazing opportunity. Since I have a goal to learn Spanish, getting a chance to visit a Spanish-speaking country would be truly incredible.

In addition, by being a part of the Global Engineering RAP I can find my smaller community within the larger CU Boulder community. I worry some about going to college and finding new friends that have common interests. In this residential community, I could find people who share the interest of building the future of the world through engineering.
