I am fortunate enough to have traveled throughout the United States as well as abroad multiple times with my family. We have traveled internationally to Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, and Canada. In Dingle, Ireland, I was in awe of the joyful community that was formed in the pubs, and in Germany I explored the walled city of Rothenburg that was unlike anything I had ever seen before. These experiences expanded my view of the world, and I learned about how other communities and cultures live and solve problems. I gained more global consciousness and started to learn ways to build cultural fluency in regions other than my own. A world view is essential for many careers, and my travel experience has widened my perspective on my education and career goals. My experiences have also pushed me out of my comfort zone many times and helped me appreciate the differences and similarities that all cultures have. All of these experiences have prepared me for this RAP in particular, and I am excited for the opportunity to be able to learn from others as a member of the Global Engineering RAP community.
I would want the person down the hall from me to be outgoing and someone who understands the importance of conversation. For me, conversation is a major part of any culture, and I would hope that we could engage in many open-minded conversations easily. I tend to be quieter, but when I am around those who are outgoing, I enjoy spending time with them and adding my own thoughts into the discussion. I want to live down the hall from a person who is easy going and still knows the importance of hard work. In the RAP, many of us will probably have similar interests and classes, and I would like to work with them on homework and projects. Lastly, I want someone who is curious about travel like I am and interested in impacting people on a global scale.
One of the reasons I am so interested in becoming part of this RAP in particular is that I have been fortunate enough to travel, and I want to be around others who are similarly interested in travel and other cultures. Engineering is all about finding solutions to problems and helping other people. I hope that in this RAP, I will be able to find like-minded people who want to help solve these problems. In general, engineering is extremely broad, and in the RAP I can observe how others think and become inspired by the world around them. Engineering is a career path where people can unite and knowledge can spread, and as engineers, we truly are able to connect the entire world. I also believe that language is a major aspect in connecting people and the world, which is why I worked hard to earn the Global Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish and continue to improve my linguistic skills in other languages. As part of the RAP, I can contribute my knowledge of language and culture to those around me, and in turn, learn other aspects of engineering, culture, and global issues from my peers and roommates.
