As an individual with a South Asian background and family living within the Southern Indian state of Karnataka, I have come to understand how a society and its values may differ drastically when compared to another society. Moreover, I have observed how my cultural homeland operates differently than the one I call home in the United States through my many visits to my hometown of Bangalore, Karnataka. My identity has also helped me understand the importance of preserving cultural practices and how to keep these practices relevant during an age of westernization. For instance, I practice cultural familial holidays with friends within my culture as well as with friends who are not. Having my community at home understand my identity allows them to accept and understand my cultural values. I have also traveled to Panama and Costa Rica with my school. In this instance, I was the individual learning about a culture that I did not identify with. I learned about how people interacted with one another and the values of the citizens within this culture. By learning and experiencing their culture, I understood what they valued and respected, ultimately allowing me to become a better citizen of the world.
The person I would want living down the hall from me should have a high value for respect. By respect, this would mean respecting others, their environment, and themselves. They should also be motivated to learn about engineering, be open to asking for guidance, and help others so that we can grow as exceptional engineers together. They should enter the Global Engineering RAP with a passion to become an engineer through their own personal interests, rather than the job opportunities or peer pressure.
By becoming a member of the Global Engineering RAP, I will learn how I can apply my knowledge of engineering to help push development and innovation in communities across the nation and the world. Through my community, I was taught to give back what I can in any way possible Through my time learning about innovation and its applications within the Global Engineering RAP, I can give back to other communities as well as my own by helping develop the local areas all across the world. These communities can range from India to Venezuela and even in Boulder. By developing the mindset of an engineer and understanding the unique global issues that these parts of the world are facing, I can pursue my purpose of helping less fortunate areas and develop systems that would make these communities thrive.
