Unlike many of my peers, I have not had the privilege to travel to many foreign countries, however, my experiences traveling within the United States and to Spain have inadvertently prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP. Principally, my travels have allowed me to see a more global perspective on issues that I see within my own culture and community. For example, when I visited California, I witnessed the homelessness epidemic that California was facing. Though I had seen instances homelessness in Denver, my experience seeing the same issue to a greater degree taught me that issues, when viewed on a global scale, often appear differently between different geographic regions, and cultures. I learned that it is important to consider that even if issues are small on a local scale, they may effect other regions and cultures more seriously. In this way one should not not dismiss issues of global significance solely on the basis that the issue does not affect their community. I believe that this lesson will be of value in the Global Engineering RAP as I work alongside my peers to address issues of global significance.
During my time in Spain, I noticed that Spanish infrastructure like roads, bridges, and sidewalks, seemed to be in generally better condition than those in my hometown community. There were no potholes in roads, no cracks or crumbling in bridges, and sidewalks looked brand new. At first, I was inclined to think that Spanish civil engineering and construction was better funded and maintained than those in Colorado. However, my curiously led me to ask one of the Barcelona locals I had met to try to gain better understanding. They explained that since the climate in Barcelona was much more warm than Colorado's cracking due to ice formation was never an issue. Because of this, Spanish infrastructure stayed in good condition for longer. This experience taught me that dealing with global issues requires an appreciation for how climate and geographic location cause issue to present themselves differently. In Global Engineering RAP, this concept will be of great importance as we seek to resolve issues of global scale which affect regions of differing climate, culture, and standards.

When I think of the ideal hall-mate for my experience in the Global Engineering RAP several words come to mind: engaged, enthusiastic, and outgoing.
I hope that my RAP neighbor will be an active member of the CU Boulder community; Though college is founded on the principal of education I believe that a well rounded individual is able to relate to people better. This person could participate in club and sports, but generally, have a drive to create positive change within their community through their relationships with others.
My ideal neighbor would also have passion for everything they do. They would carry infectious energy into every project, activity, and aspect of their lives. In this way, the person would motivate his or her peers while improving the atmosphere of their community.
I would also hope that my neighbor be willing to create bonds with strangers. In this way, my dorm-mate would foster friendships and prompt conversations with everyone in the CU community and beyond.

College provides us with the opportunity to learn amongst many like-minded peers with a wide range of skillsets, cultures, and identities. In this way, I believe that college is the optimal time to collaborate among students to address issues of global significance. I hope to seize this opportunity by participating in the Global Engineering RAP, collaborating with students in other engineering disciplines, and more broadly, take on global issues because I hope to leave a positive legacy in both the CU Boulder and global engineering communities.
By working alongside fellow students to solve pressing issues I think that I will be better prepared to take on other challenges I face in my academic, professional, and personal life. My involvement with the RAP community will better prepare me for group aerospace engineering projects in my academic career while working alongside engineers of other disciplines will prepare me for the career based challenges of effective collaboration with other engineering departments at any given working environment. Furthermore, I think that my involvement with RAP has the potential to carry through the rest of my life as the relationships I build with fellow RAP students may last well beyond my college experience.
I really do believe that I will be an asset to to the CU Boulder Global Engineering RAP; I will contribute to the community though my enthusiasm, grit, and determination. I will motivate my peers, serve as a leader when my group gets lost, and bring my relentless problem-solving determination to every meeting, project, and discussion. Outside of RAP related activities I will be a friendly and compassionate neighbor always willing to lend a helping hand.
Thank you for your consideration.
