Engineering (Open Option)
Spanish (3), English (5)
Throughout my time in Middle and High School, I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel with various school groups. During the summer bridging my 8th and 9th grades, I was able to go to Spain and France with the language teachers at Mountain Ridge Middle School. On that trip, I got to speak my Spanish in a real world situation to communicate with guides and locals in Spain. In 9th and 10th grade, I took several trips to Costa Rica with EcoTeach to get involved with local programs. While in Costa Rica, we got involved with a primary school in a small town where we helped on projects to make life easier for the students. The first year we helped to create planters for the schools garden, and the second year was spent more on the buildings and spending time with the kids. The whole time I got to speak Spanish to the many children, and I even got to teach them some English. Also in tenth grade, I got to go to a variety of European countries with EF Tours for a global leaders and learners summit in which I had to work with scholars from a variety of countries to solve a problem.
When I am being completely honest, I feel like it is important to have a variety of personalities and lifestyles whenever trying to solve a complex problem. Having as many viewpoints and backgrounds as possible can never be a negative thing. That being said I think that anyone with the drive and will to be a part of the RAP would be a perfect neighbor for me. To add to that I am very flexible when it comes to how my day unfolds, so adapting to a roommate or RAP-mate’s schedule would not be a problem.
I think that the prospect of being able to help others in a meaningful way would be one of the best ways I can use my life. This RAP provides a clear start for that route in life and not applying for this RAP would be throwing away an important opportunity. The RAP also allows for me to connect with likeminded students, and having been able to talk with many engineers in the past, networking early on can have no negative impacts on one’s career. Joining this community might serve me well in the future when trying to accomplish a project abroad.
