I was fortunate enough to get to live in Spain for a month over the summer of my sophomore year. I got to attend class with people from all over the world, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Turkey, and many more. Coming from a small town in rural Colorado it was a bit of a cultural shock because I was exposed to something that was unlike anything I had ever done before. I had never had roommates, and here I was with roomates from Italy, Norway, and Taiwan, and for the most part could only communicate in Spanish. I became extremely interested in other languages and understanding and respecting other cultures, and really inspired me to be what IB instilled in me, to be a Global Citizen.
I want the person down the hall from me to be different from me. There is no understating the importance of diversity, and at first I want to be uncomfortable and challenged, by ideas and traditions that are different from my own. I want to be able to learn about their world, and I would want to share what little there is too know about mine. It is so important to have someone that is different than you, that can challenge you, that lets you realize exactly how large and diverse the world is.
I want to be apart of the Global Engineering RAP because I want to both learn and contribute to culture and diversity of Boulder. The world is increasingly connected and it is important to recognize it. As an engineer, it is important to find ways to make technologies more accessible to everyone, not just a particular group of people. I want to be a part of this community so I can share and receive ideas how to improve the world as a whole. A modern problem which can be solved with the mindset of a Global Engineer is that of AI, and the ethical implications that are not being considered, especially with regards to how AI processes language. The only way to solve problems like this is to approach them with a global mindset, which I think that the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder will help us to achieve.
