While traveling with my family in Jamaica, I observed informal settlements constructed of lean-to structures built from scavenged materials. These were in close proximity to expensive resorts. The disparity between the resources available to one group of individuals versus the other was saddening. I hope to one day do what I can to help provide access to resources for communities in need.
I would like to live down the hall from someone who is supportive of their neighbors and is willing to work cooperatively. I come from a small, homogeneous island community and I would appreciate getting to know people who are from places unlike my hometown. My ideal neighbor would have strengths and weaknesses different from my own so that we could work together to overcome obstacles. I'm looking forward to making friends from diverse backgrounds with new perspectives.
I would love to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP, as I feel it will help me better understand what engineers can do for the benefit of people in need around the world and the health of our environment. I plan to work as a member of a program such as Engineers Without Borders after completing my education, as it would enable me to make the biggest impact I could to improve people's lives as an individual in this field. I believe that the unique community the RAP provides would fit my learning style well.
