My mother’s side of the family comes from Taiwan, and most of my relatives still live there. My first visit to Taiwan was at the age of ten. I was immersed into an entirely new world, and even at a young age, I was able to see the differences in their way of life compared to mine. They would wait in single file lines for the public transportation. Their walking signs at crosswalks had a little man who would run faster and faster until you could no longer walk and the sign turned red. Throughout my trips I would notice people wearing masks on public transit, the stores, or even on the street. A year ago I would have thought it was something abnormal, but after the pandemic I now realize what a simple face covering can do for the world. Since COVID-19 I have learned more about Taiwan and their technology. I have gained even more respect for their response to emergent issues such as the pandemic and their inspiring innovations and I hope to one day help my community as they have theirs.
I believe progress cannot be made without difference in opinion, critical thinking and teamwork. While it sounds appealing to have someone who agrees with my beliefs, productive brainstorming needs a group of people who are willing to give constructive criticism, and have different perspectives that can help me grow. I want to be in a community that is diverse, where everyone has their own experiences and ideas that they carry.
I hope the person down the hall from me as well as the rest of the global engineering community believes in helping others and is willing to work hard for it. In addition, I hope that every person down or up the hall believes in working hard due to their interest in helping the world, not just for a grade or requirement. Those who only work because they are required to do not expand their learning and put in extra effort because they are not curious about what they are learning. Those who want to learn because of their own self motivation are willing to put in extra work and time to think beyond their required studies
While I am excited to begin my education as an engineer and learn how to build, calculate and solve, one day I want to be able to use my skills in the real world, and through the global engineering RAP my dream can become a close reality. I will be able to begin applying what I am learning right away in my classes through activities, classes and even just studying with my peers in the RAP which will give me a deeper understanding of the topics I am covering. Additionally, if there is material I need extra help understanding I will have a whole community by my side willing to help.
I want to make the most out of my education and I believe that learning in a community of others who want the same will help me achieve that. I am excited to be a part of a community that is as focused and motivated as I am about solving real world issues with resourceful innovations. Living in such a community will further help me work with, learn and contribute to a team. I will learn how to see other perspectives and be a devil’s advocate even with my own work.
At CU Boulder, I plan to take chinese in addition to my engineering classes. I hope to one day become fluent so I can communicate better with my relatives, and even my peers. I want to help others grow and learn, along with being a friendly face. I believe that being kind and respectful to others, though a small act, can have a big impact on any community, and that is what I will bring to this community.
