I've travelled to a variety of countries over the course of the last four years, and I've enjoyed learning about the different cultures and norms from other parts of the world, and adapting some of them into my life. Travel to countries like France, England, Iceland, Japan, and many more has taught me how to adapt and learn from other types of personalities and ways of life. For example, in Japan, it's a cultural norm to follow rules like crosswalk signs even when there are no cars to be seen, whereas in England and France, crosswalks are considered an optional suggestion, even during rush-hour traffic. Having had the opportunity to visit and learn about cultures different than mine, I’ve become flexible and open to learning everything I can from the people around me. Travel has prepared me to learn techniques and tricks from the environment I’m in by necessitating, and taught me to evaluate situations to tackle urgent problems in the most effective ways possible. In addition, I have family from all over the world, so I’ve had the opportunity to experience a variety of cultures. The experiences I’ve had traveling around the world has taught me to appreciate and learn from the new cultures and people around me, and taught me to be efficient and thoughtful in new situations.
I’d like to live near someone who shares a passion for engineering and physics, but who has a different background and perspective from me that I can learn from. I would want them to be an open, accepting kind of person who’s willing to listen to other people and try to help them with their own experiences. They could be interested in the same or a very different kind of engineering, because we would try to learn from each other either way. In addition, someone who is interested in collaborating and comparing ideas in addition to having a good sense of humor could create a culture where a variety of people coming from different backgrounds and in different specialties can lend itself to the benefit of all, both professionally and interpersonally. I would want the person living down the hall from me to be interested and willing to collaborate with me so we can exchange both practical and cultural ideas.
I want to become a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I think it’s the best step to take to gain a wide understanding of techniques and perspectives, which are integral to becoming a successful engineer. Gaining international experience through this program will set me up to tackle global problems with a deeper understanding of the impact they’re having. In addition, I am looking to improve my own perspective on the world, and I believe understanding and trying to tackle global problems is a good way to gain an insight to the inequalities that must be rectified, and prepare me for work in a professional field. A community of students focused on engineering will facilitate progress and understanding of the challenging material and problems, because we will have each other to turn to for help. I personally find that helping other people with work cements my own understanding of the concepts better than if I was just studying on my own. This habit lends itself to increasing my communication and collaboration skills in addition to being mutually beneficial for me and my classmates. As an engineer, it’s important to gain a broad understanding of techniques and be able to communicate effectively with those around you, and being surrounded by students with a common interest in engineering will promote both of these skills rapidly. I personally want to participate in this program because it provides many opportunities, and a supportive community for the way I learn best.
