My dad & my mom's dad are both from Brazil. I lived in Brazil for two years of elementary school (2 & 3rd grade) and have visited almost every single year, staying for over a month during summers. I'm very connected to Brazil as I lived & went to school there for years, almost all members of my family live there, I have friends there that I speak actively to, and Brazil is a true home of mine. This has thoroughly prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP because I have a full understanding of another culture and part of the world and am equipped to have conversations with others about how to approach the problems of global poverty with a mindset tailored towards individual cultures. My experience has made me linguistically and culturally fluent and globally aware.

Beyond Brazil, I have also been on an exchange program to France. In this exchange program I was hosted by another high school student and visited French schools. I expanded my language abilities and cultural perspective by immersing myself in a culture that is not my own, and in doing so broadened my cultural perspective and practiced appreciating different cultures. I also hosted French students on several occasions, including for over a month during the summer. This further prepared me for Global by enabling me to appreciate and engage with diverse perspectives.
I would love to have somebody down the hall from me who is interesting and engaging, who I could have fun late night adventures with but also serious discussions about the world. I like having discussions with engaging people who bring different perspectives to a conversation and it’s my hope that I would be able to talk to them. I hope that they would be able to relate to my own multicultural experience and be able to share parts of their own culture with me, and in turn be open to learning about mine. Sharing and exploring different types of food and cuisine is also something that I hope they’re interested in doing. It would also be special if they spoke another language I speak or even one that I don’t so that we could practice and learn together! Beyond that, someone with similar interests to mine and who is interested in sharing experiences together would be ideal. Painting and playing guitar are both passions of mine and it would be wonderful to paint together or jam for a little while. Equally, it’s my hope that they would share my love for the Colorado outdoors and we could go hiking and snowboarding together! I also love volunteering and hope that they would join me in pursuing different fun service opportunities, like helping with adaptive skiing at Breckenridge. Aside from fun experiences, it is also my hope that they would be serious about school and willing to study and work together - a good balance of work and play. Finally, I really hope that they are interested in having a broad worldview and developing themselves in college through a wonderful and multifaceted experience.
I knew I wanted to join the Global Engineer RAP at CU Boulder even before I applied to Boulder because my sister Vivian Duarte was a member of it herself in her freshman year and both enjoyed and made the most of it. I remember hearing about her experiences and thinking that I wanted her experience of being be able to hear different perspectives, meet interesting people, and meet people who really care about the world like I do. I want to join Global because I am also from Brazil and I know the impact that global poverty has and I want to be part of the solution for the future. I also enjoy learning about other cultures and look forward to meeting all kinds of different people, which makes me want to apply to Global more. I think this community will contribute to my training as an engineer by broadening my perspective of the world and allowing me to collaborate with other people and learn more about the world and what can be accomplished when we work together. Working in teams is a special part of the engineering community and I think this community will deeply contribute to that aspect of my training as an engineer. I hope that by the end of my time at Global I will have been equipped to consider diverse and culturally conscious ways of approaching global issues. I hope too that it will expand my perspective as a person - it is my goal to learn another language while completing my undergraduate degree. I personally plan to contribute to the residential community by being willing to show up and give discussions and RAP activities my all. I can bring my own perspective as someone who grew up in a multicultural home and who can speak to some of the challenges Brazil faces. I hope that as an engineer I will be able to represent my community and eventually show up to work with their needs in mind. I am very willing to learn and expand my own mind and self, which I believe will contribute to an open learning atmosphere within the Global RAP. I look forward to engaging fully with the community and listening to the perspectives and lived experiences of others. I plan to be a good roommate and a good hall mate - hopefully I’ll match some of what others wrote for their ideal down the hall mate! Another way that I can contribute is with my creativity - in addition to being interesting in engineering, I also love art and hope to fuse that into my work. In Global, my own personal horizons will naturally be broadened by my participation and I know I will be able to grow more as an individual. I hope to contribute to the RAP and make the most of it by being open to experience, listening, discussing, and friendship.
