The very first trip that I remember going on was to Cancun, Mexico. My parents and grandparents have always valued travel which has really impacted me over the past 18 years. I have been very fortunate to travel around the world. When I was young my grandparents started by taking my sister and I around the United States. Over the years we worked up into bigger trips to different areas of the world. This has given me the ability to understand different cultures around the world.
Some of my favorite trips are when I go to Central America. I took Spanish classes through my first three years of schooling. I then moved to Alaska from Colorado which meant a different school with a different program. Once I was able to take Spanish again in middle school I did. Taking Spanish through out middle and high school has been fun and made trips to Spanish speaking countries fun as well. My grandparents bought a retirement home in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico so I also enjoy going down there and practicing my Spanish.
Two summers ago I travelled to Italy and Greece. It was interesting for me to see another culture different from what I have see before. I also noticed the similarities in Italy to things I see in Spanish speaking countries. One of the other things I love about travelling is learning about the history of where I am. I am always dragging my sister and grandparents to museums and historical sites. This allows me to learn more about where I am and really feel like I know where I am visiting,
With all of this travel I have really learned about other cultures and had the chance to understand others. This is a part of me that I want to continue to expand on. In the Global Engineering FYAE I would continue to learn about the world and understand it in new ways. From travel, you gain a lot but I also understand the value of learning in a more formal setting. I am excited to be in a community of students that are on similar paths as me. The Global Engineering FYAE would allow me to do that.
I have always enjoyed talking to people and learning how their experiences are different than mine. I moved to Alaska in 2012 and that was a big change for me. Now looking back on my time in Alaska I am very grateful for the things I have learned and experienced. Alaska has many different communities and cultures in the state. The Anchorage School District is the most diverse school district in the nation. Because of this I have learned about a lot of different cultures first hand. These are the kind of people I enjoy talking to and the people I want to continue to interact with.
Being able to talk to people with different cultures while I was going through school broadened my knowledge and helped my education. Living in a hall with people from all over will continue to allow me to expand my education even more. The experiences and friendships I would make living in the Global Engineering FYAE is something I am looking forward to. There would be so many different people with such diverse backgrounds I know I would be happy living with any one of those people.
Originally, I did not know what I wanted to do for rooming. I started talking to a friend that wanted to room in the Global Engineering FYAE and I did some research. After reading about the program I got really excited about it. Going into college I knew I would have to focus on my school work and I was worried about loosing some of the skills I have. One of those skills was my Spanish. Growing up I went to a core knowledge school. During my time there we started taking Spanish classes in first grade. After I moved to Alaska I was unable to continue taking Spanish classes. When I got to middle school I started taking Spanish again. This past year I earned my seal of biliteracy and I wanted to find a way to continue learning Spanish.
At my high school there is a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program. I was fortunate enough to take those classes all four years of high school. I was also on a First Tech Challenge Robotics team for five years. These skills have helped me grow an understanding of the engineering process and engineering. One thing I have not really learned through the program is how to have global relations. In my mind this is an important skill to have going into engineering and science careers. This field is so universal that if you do not know how to communicate with other countries you may not be as successful. With the Global Engineering FYAE I would begin to learn and understand engineering on a greater scale and I believe that to be very important.
Living in the Global Engineering FYAE I would be able to contribute in many different ways. My life experiences would allow me to have conversations with others that could help us further our education as well as create friendships. As I talked about above, I took PLTW classes in high school which will help me with the engineering courses we will be taking. This will allow me to talk to my classmates and work with them to understand the concepts on a deeper level. With all of this I believe being in the Global Engineering FYAE would help me become a better person and have a greater impact on the world.
