The summer after my junior year of high school I went on a service trip to Belize. We focused on ecology and the effects of climate change on the different environments in Belize, and it was very interesting too see how the change in the weather has affected these animals and ecosystems. I was there right at the end of dry season, and because a lot of electricity comes from dams, which need water to function, a power blackout would have happened just 6 days after the first rainstorm of the season, which happened the last night I was there. Learning that was happening was just shocking. I have never been in a situation where I have to worry about my power being shut off, and to learn that this is the reality that other people face was incredibly eye opening. This experience has led me to think about the different living situations people are in around the world, and how I can help create a future in which people don't have to be worried about their power shutting off just because it hasn't rained recently.
There are so many different experiences had from people all over the world, as well as ideas on how to solve problems that this whole world faces, so to learn more about the world as a whole can be extremely beneficial to the field of engineering as it can diversity brainstorming solutions. Similarly, with a global mindset in the field of engineering, we can be sure that there are no unseen side effects of projects can can affect other groups of people. For example, in my science classes, while doing projects by myself, it can be very difficult to think through all the possible outcomes of one idea, however when I start talking my ideas over with my classmates, we can work through the holes in each others ideas, which doesn't only benefit myself, it benefits all of us. This example is on a much smaller scale, but when we apply this concept to the world as a whole, the ideas that people can brainstorm together when everyone has a voice can create a better future for all of us.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I don't only want to learn how to be an engineer, I want to have a purpose to use my engineering skills to create a better future. I think there are a lot of issues in the world that can be fixed if people from around the world communicate with each other, and being a member of the Global Engineering RAP can be a stepping stone to fixing some of the problems that face the world as a whole. I am especially interested in working to prevent climate change, and to reverse the effects that it has already had on the world, which aligns with one of the main aspirations of the Global Engineering RAP. I imagine it can be hard to get started working in this field, but Global Engineering RAP can provide opportunities and teaching that I can't get anywhere else that can help my in my future. I can personally contribute my dedication to learning and passion to preserve the planet to the residential community, as well as my love to travel. I have always been very interested in study abroad as I am curious how what I learn in college can be applied to different environments, and the Global Engineering RAP can help me in my aspirations.
