Biological Engineering
English 5
The opportunities to travel and study abroad were driving factors in my college decision process. I love to travel, explore new places and encounter new people. During the summer of 2022, I spent two weeks in Scotland and England with my best friend's family. This experience gave me an appreciation for history, geography, culture (and the ability to drive on the left side of the road). In May of 2024, I went on a pilgrimage to Italy with my high school peers. We visited Rome, Sienna, Florence and Assisi. This trip led me to connect with the roots of my faith and history. I also was able to apply the knowledge I gained in taking three years of Latin in high school. With my family, I have been able to travel to destination in the U.S. and Central America to experience different culture, climates, languages, past-times and foods. Travel shows me what makes people unique, but it also demonstrates the values that unite us all.
As an aspiring biological engineer, my hope is to use math and science to solve real-world problems. I believe that solutions that result from engineering can benefit people across the globe, not just in my small community. Global perspectives can bring to light problems that would never have been imagined by engineers who are only looking at a single culture or geography. Seeing issues firsthand in other nations will help engineers gain experience and be better prepared to help. Engineering is a field that requires collaboration and team efforts, especially from people who have different sets of knowledge, but the same goals.
I would enjoy being a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I want to continue to become a well-rounded person making a difference in our world. One of my most meaningful experiences in high school was attending the Fundamentals of Engineering Program with Summer Springboard at UC San Diego in the summer of 2024. I did this to learn about the various types of engineering and encounter other students with similar interests from all around the world. We learned about the design, mathematics, and science of how the world works. Various projects that we completed were building a bridge using spaghetti, constructing a prosthetic hand, and creating a robotic car. Students that I collaborated with on these projects were from California, Oregon, North Carolina, and as far away as Brazil. From the very first day I was there, I clicked with these students of different genders and ethnicity than me as we talked about what we have in common and hope to pursue in the future. I appreciated their various perspectives and suggestions on the projects. I went into the program nervous that I wouldn't have enough background in the tougher topics, but when we all came together and worked with one another, our different areas of expertise fit like a puzzle. This experience taught me that having a team made up of people with different strengths can be a huge advantage to solving real-world problems.
