Working with Spanish-speaking students at school has grown my understanding of the Spanish language and my ability to communicate across cultures. My AP Spanish class has visited the ESOL history class frequently this year to help the Spanish-speaking students complete their history projects. Our role has been helping the students understand the information they see in English by translating it into easily-understandable Spanish. During these sessions, my Spanish conversational skills have definitely improved, and I can now collaborate with the students easily to complete their projects. Once we got to know each other better, my group started talking about things we had in common, like our love of soccer and music. Then, a few of the students shared that they had to leave their home country and their move has set them back in school. My ability to speak in Spanish allowed me to feel empathy and understand the hardships people in other cultures often face. I was also able to reassure the students that they can still succeed even if they are struggling now. Hearing the students' stories made my role feel more meaningful, because I could help them feel supported and understood. Helping Spanish-speaking students has inspired me to continue connecting with people who speak different languages, which I have been interested in ever since my family visited Costa Rica when I was younger. I want to use my knowledge and understanding of the world to support and improve the lives of people from other cultures.
I would want to live down the hall from someone who is friendly, involved, interested in exploring new ideas and places, and passionate about what they are learning. I would want this person to be kind and open to making friends with me and the other people in our community. These qualities will help me bond with the other person and feel more comfortable interacting with the group as a whole. Because we will be doing a lot of activities as a community, I would want this person to be involved and active in all the social events, so our community can feel energetic and lively. In addition, I would be excited to live near someone who likes to explore both Colorado's landscape and other areas of the world. I love to travel, and having someone to share experiences with would be an amazing part of living in a residential community. Lastly, I would want to live down the hall from someone who is passionate about learning. One of the things I look forward to the most about college is being surrounded by people who want to learn more about the world and how we can help improve it. We would both be learning engineering concepts and having someone else to talk through problems and classwork can help us academically. If this person has other academic interests or a unique cultural background, they can provide the community with a new perspective on engineering concepts. I would hope this person wants to use their engineering degree to do good in the world, so our community can learn from each other and help people on a global scale through engineering!
I want to join the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder so I can use my environmental engineering career to give back to people in need. I have been accepted into the Environmental Engineering program at CU, and I understand that addressing environmental problems and serving vulnerable communities are inseparable. Climate change impacts those in poverty much more than it impacts the affluent. Therefore, getting involved with Global Engineering will help me use my career to address both environmental concerns and the people they affect most. I have become very interested in the social sciences during my high school classes. Taking Psychology has sparked my interest in understanding how people think and interact with each other. Learning about Global Engineering and pursuing the minor can combine my interests in science and math with my desire to learn more about people and our connection to the environments around us. In short, the Global Engineering RAP program will allow me to learn about everything I am interested in. It will also help me make this knowledge impactful and understand how to serve vulnerable communities through engineering. I will contribute academically to the residential community by bringing an excitement to learn, and I hope to find opportunities where our community can engage in service that applies our learning.

By joining Global Engineering, I will continue my personal growth through language learning. Global Engineering will motivate me to keep learning Spanish, so one day I can provide engineering solutions to Spanish-speaking communities. I have always wanted to become fluent in Spanish so I can connect with new people and explore different parts of the world. Making progress in Spanish language learning will not only help me achieve this goal, but use my language abilities to better contribute as an engineer. As a member of the Global Engineering RAP, I can connect with other Spanish-speaking students at CU and with Spanish-speaking communities abroad.
