I am a student with a mixed and diverse identity. My father is from Hungary, my mother is a Hungarian born in Romania, but I was born in California and lived there until the age of 7. After kindergarten my parents decided to move back to Hungary. They felt that experiencing European culture and getting to know my roots from first hand experience would be beneficial for me, and I completed my elementary school studies in Hungary. During this time I traveled across Europe with my family many times, hiked in the Italian Alps, visited Croatian beaches, experienced the culture of Austria, and hosted German exchange students in our house in Hungary.
For 8th grade we decided to move back to California to get adjusted to the US education system and to prepare for US universities. Then, during the spring of 8th grade, the COVID pandemic hit, and later our high school switched to online learning for the whole school year. Since schools in Hungary still continued in-person education, and after considering the negative effects of distance learning, we decided to move back to Hungary. However, my dream has always been to study at a US university, so I did not want to give up the US school system. Fortunately, my local high school in California offered an asynchronous online learning program, so I continued the US high school online, parallel with the in-person high school in Hungary.
I completed 9th and 10th grade in this arrangement, and then moved back to California in 11th grade. Experiencing the different teaching approaches of two school systems turned out to be a great advantage. The practical approach of the US system combined with the strong theoretical foundation of European education gave me a deep understanding of math and physics.
I am a bit of a technocrat, that’s what having a roots in Silicon Valley does to you. In my high school, I met my best friends in the robotics team. I really enjoy spending time with people interested in technology and who enjoy technical challenges and discovering new areas. I also enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking in the mountains, and I am hoping that I will find students with similar interests.
College years are not just about studying, but also about forming friendships. Loud parties are not my thing, and I am hoping that the RAP program will give me a chance to meet and socialize with people who have similar interests. I enjoy helping people in their studies, and I hope that I will have a chance to collaborate with others in study groups. I am also looking forward to collaborating with other students in the program on engineering projects. My multicultural experience has made me an open minded person who can easily come along with people of different backgrounds, and I believe the diverse cultural background of students in the RAP would be a perfect fit for me.
