During one of my previous mission trips to Memphis TN, I was exposed to majority-minority groups where I helped volunteer to serve food and clothes to homeless black populations. This gave me a new perspective towards all people in general and the struggles that many can face day-to-day that go unnoticed. Memphis specifically is ranked one of the highest in the nation for crime which is due to a positive feedback loop. A constant cycle of homelessness, crime, and injustice. I had the opportunity to personally connect with a handful of the homeless people we served and I gained an understanding of their stories on how they became homeless. This experience also gave me the ability to recognize what different communities need based on their current struggles. This applies to my engineering career through my motivation to help create a positive change in the world. Patience, an open mind, and collaboration with others from this experience are what can help me during my time in the Global Engineering RAP to solve world issues and break down cultural barriers.
The person I would want to live down the hall from in the Global Engineering RAP is inviting, open-minded, passionate, and ideally a good communicator. Upon my first year, I hope the person down the hall is welcoming in class so that we can expand our connections outside the classroom; Anywhere from a study date to a hike, or to choose them as a project partner where I know they will put in the effort just as much as me. I hope that they are truly intrigued with the engineering field so much that they aren’t afraid to explore different opportunities or navigate through a challenge. I hope that they will be open to any ideas that I or others may bring to light, but will not be afraid to put in their contributions as well. Lastly, I hope that they are also equally engaged outside of the classroom in clubs or extracurricular activities. This would help give me another opportunity to connect with them through those mediums and to get to know them personally in order to have a dynamic relationship.
By being a member of the Global Engineering RAP, I would have the honor of experiencing an inclusive and collaborative learning experience both academically and personally. By being a part of the Global Engineering RAP I will have exposure to other students like me who are passionate about real-world challenges applicable to the entire world. I will have the opportunity to learn how to collaborate among a diverse group of people, which is representative of how the real world is. Not only will my technical skills expand, but my personal growth as well. By interacting and connecting with those far and near in backgrounds, I can gain insight into different cultures and a deeper understanding of current events. I can gain a deeper appreciation for all communities by trying new things and fostering an open mind so that I can be more culturally resilient in the future. Lastly, in my residential community, I would love to help foster a more inviting environment by initiating cultural exchange nights out. Everyone, including myself, loves food. Food is a great way to grow connections and have a good time while getting to try culturally different foods than you normally would.
