So far in life, I have been very fortunate to see many different places and cultures. Inside the US I've been to every state in New England as well as the Carolinas, Colorado, Virginia, Pennsylvania. Within these states, the biggest cultural shock was staying with my grandparent's friends in Pennsylvania who are Amish. Even though they live less than 20 minutes from a 'normal city' they don't use electricity, they don't drive cars, and they are some of the kindest and hardest working people I've ever met. Even though I have only visited two or three times, it's truly something that sticks with me. As someone who wants to be an engineer, it's cool to see how processes automated by technology in their analog states differ from 'the norm'. Outside of the US, I have also been to Quebec, Prague, Berlin, and many cities in both Southern and Northern Italy. This has introduced me to many diverse cultures and languages that give me respect for the larger world around us. But, as someone who has been studying Italian for the past four years and as someone who grew up in an Italian family, I have felt the most connection when visiting Italy. In fact my dream is to work remotely from Italy and or retire there some day. I love the architecture, the cities, the language, the traditions, and most importantly espresso. This has greatly inspired me to take a more international approach to engineering and business, whether it be communicating with international companies or supporting infrastructure, I know humanities and new perspectives will be vital to my future.
As someone applying to the Global Engineering RAP, I would be very interested in living down the hall from someone who is nothing like me. I love to learn, and absorb culture, and I would love to know how someone who comes from a completely different situation ended up three doors down. I think it would be especially cool if this person was bilingual, so they could help expose me to a new language. In my eyes, the best way to learn is through exposure, so if I was around that language everyday, I'm sure I would pick up on a few things. This is all of course assuming that they are social. I personally am not a big fan of parties, but I do like to be social and make friends. As such, my ideal hall neighbor would be cool with hanging out, going on adventures, and trying new things . I don't need to spend every day with them, but as I will probably see them most days, I hope we'll be friends. I don’t want to be sneaking down to the common area, every day, in my slippers, praying Mr.ThreeDoorsDown is still asleep until I make my way to class. All this aside, I am not really too picky, and I know I will share common ground with pretty much anyone who gets into the Global Engineering RAP. So, as long as they are not throwing ragers or stopping me from doing my thing, I'd be pretty happy to make some new friends.
There are a few reasons why I would really like to be a part of this program. First of all, I love the idea of being surrounded by like minded individuals. In a school as large as Boulder, coming from a graduating high school class of 200 kids, I feel I might find myself lost at Boulder. But, by being part of this smaller community within the main community of Boulder, I don't foresee this becoming an issue. More importantly, however, I genuinely care about our planet and global communities. While I do want to be a computer engineer, I also want to be educated in sustainability, work with forward thinking companies, and make a positive impact. I feel that the training provided in this program will allow me to connect with more people and use my degree in engineering to build infrastructure sustainably rather than dig us into a deeper hole. Additionally, I am greatly interested in expanding my perspective on the world. I have grown up as a middle class white male, and I know there are so many cultures and languages out there that I know nothing about. While I have talked a lot about Italy on this application, I also want to learn about Middle-Eastern, Asian, and African cultures. In order to be the best engineer and best person I can be, I need to be educated in more than just engineering. That is exactly what I feel this program will provide. I also think that I will be able to share my passion and ideas with those around me to help us all grow into better people and engineers. If I am a computer engineer working with a group of environmental engineers, a mechanical engineers, and a civil engineers for a better future, what could we not accomplish?
