I’ve been fortunate enough to have the recent opportunity to visit London with my family, and within that trip to explore the city on my own one day. I met a friend in Chinatown, who walked me through the district, translating random conversations we passed by and pointing out the Lunar New Year decorations. Later, at the Tate, I read through the email transcripts that accompanied Lydia Ourahmane’s The Third Choir. While the piece itself was interesting, reading the process of the piece was the most impactful part. Ourahmane argues for the barrels as if they’re hostages, the barriers she has to work around mirroring the immigration struggles many face. London has a rich history, however the magic is that it’s not all its own. As city planners seem intent on glossing over this history, with the gentrification of Brixton, the buying up of mewhouses, and other such projects, it becomes essential to not just experience the city, but to explore and understand it.
I’d love to live down the hall from someone with a contrasting skill set but complimentary values to mine. I’d love to see my creativity challenged, as I tend to have strong ideas with more abstract thoughts on how to accomplish them. The benefit of RAP would be the ability to surround myself with people who understand and succeed where I may struggle, allowing us both to flourish. It would be important that those around me were reasonably collaborative, at least willing to talk through problems together. I would also like to live by someone with different experiences to mine but with the same appreciation of where engineering and culture intersect, creating a larger pool of experience to develop from. Most importantly, they should be passionate, cooperative, and invested in improving both the world and themselves with their work.
The most compelling facet of the RAP program is the connections I would get to make. The opportunity to approach projects while surrounded by people working through similar things means having a built in support system to problem solve with. There’s also the benefit of diverse perspectives, creating constant discussion. The RAP program would allow me to develop ideas with others, share experiences, and access even more connections with the mentorship and alumni networks. Being around like minded people, whether playing games or brainstorming solutions, means making the most of my academic and social experience.
