I have grown up in a multicultural family. My mother is a first generation immigrant from Slovakia, and because of this I have developed a great appreciation of other cultures and strive to immerse myself in a foreign environment with every opportunity. Because of our strong family ties to Slovakia, we have visited my mother’s home village multiple times as well as travelled all throughout Europe. When travelling I try to experience and absorb as much local culture as possible, from learning the language to adopting many cultural traditions. These experiences have given me an aptitude to explore the unknown and an ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I believe that a culturally diverse society is instrumental to success because it allows one to consider an issue from multiple points of view. I hope to use these qualities as a global citizen along with my passion for engineering to enhance the experience of many through the Global Engineering Program at CU.
I value the social aspects of my educational career as much as the academic endeavors because being social makes me happy, and if I were not to be happy at college, then I would not be able to perform at my full potential. My ideal college dorm would include a diverse array of people from all different walks of life who share similar goals of excelling in engineering. I believe that it is vital to surround myself with people who are like-minded in order to reach my full potential and to thrive through leading a happy, healthy, productive life in college.
I am hopeful that the person living down the hall from me in my dorm would be someone who shares these ideals, and so we would be able to support each other throughout our experiences in college. I am a very active individual, so I would be thrilled if others living in my dorm were able to accompany me on mountaineering trips, bike rides, ski trips, hikes, or any other outdoor adventures. Apart from motivating me to stay active, the ideal dorm would be full of people who are serious about their academics, and who would happily give their best efforts to succeed. Because I would be surrounded by people who are willing to put in such a tremendous level of work, I would be motivated to maintain my strong work ethic as well, benefiting others and succeeding myself. I am looking forward to studying with an amazing group of the brightest minds to conquer academic challenges. I believe that with the motivation and community of like-minded students surrounding me, the potential to succeed in engineering would be limitless.

Throughout my life, I have had countless experiences in which I was forced to acclimate rapidly to an alien environment with no help from others. I never had a true sense of community when growing up due to my constant switching of schools because of family relocation. When I finally settled at my current high school, I was once again required to quickly adapt to the new environment. In times such as these, I have found that having a community of like-minded people surrounding you and supporting you in your transition is crucial to success.
For me, that community was marching band. When I first joined my high school, I took a blind leap into the band community and was met with open arms. Throughout my first year of experience, the friendship, council, and community that the band provided me allowed me to grow as a student and as an individual. Without the warm arms of a community like this, I would have struggled throughout this first year and may have been less successful throughout high school.
I believe that the Global Engineering RAP at the University of Colorado, Boulder would be the perfect introduction to the new environment of college. With my unique skills and mindset, I will be a thriving contributor to the Global Engineering community, helping other students to find a sense of community within Boulder as well. I have always been a natural leader and communicator, and I believe that I will be an extremely valuable member of the program because of this. I have learned to go out of my way to form friendships with others, and often find myself helping others in need. One of the most rewarding aspects of leadership for me is the ability to help others succeed, and through the Global Engineering RAP I will be able to receive and pass down knowledge from more experienced engineers for the benefit of everybody.
Overall, the Global Engineering Program at CU Boulder would be the ideal community for me because of the perfect balance of academic rigor and extracurricular exercise which is provided. The program would allow me to perform at my greatest potential by taking advantage of all that CU Boulder has to offer, while simultaneously allowing me to build a community of mutual support.
