Throughout my life, I have traveled out of state countless times and for long periods, and these experiences have helped me learn to adjust to new living situations and different places. For example, I have lived with my extended family in Ohio for weeks each year, and I have traveled out of state numerous times for vacation. My ability to adapt to my surroundings and feel comfortable living outside of my house has prepared me for not only going out of state to live full-time in my college dorm, but these experiences have developed my ability to focus and effectively work in a program like the Global Engineering RAP program.
If I were to live in the Global Engineering RAP program, I would want to live amongst people who are passionate about and engaged with engineering as a subject. However, more than anything I would like to be surrounded by a community that is open to supporting their fellow engineers. This kind of compassion would mean being open to helping those who are struggling either academically or personally and being able to uplift those around them instead of fostering an environment of competition or isolation. I envision my dormmates as excited by the opportunity to share new ideas or hear perspectives from others for everyone to benefit from a fresh point of view.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP program because I think living amongst a community of passionate and driven engineers will enrich my learning experience at CU Boulder by giving me access to talk to and study with other engineers as well as helping me find a group of friends who are just as passionate about engineering as I am. I believe that having a strong community is an integral part of learning since when you do not know people in the same position as you, it is easy to feel like you are the only one struggling. Being surrounded by a quality group of people can be the difference between excelling in a field and crumpling under the pressure of putting alone. The Global Engineering RAP program would be the perfect opportunity for me to connect with my fellow students and better engage with engineering. As a member of the Global Engineering RAP program, I would be able to offer my support to the students around me who might need extra help in their coursework by putting together study sessions or offering to tutor them. I would uplift those around me by being compassionate to those in need, patient to those in turmoil, and friendly to everyone around me. Additionally, I would be more than willing to attend the social events in William’s Village and engage with my community whenever I am able.
