While I have not studied abroad, my experience traveling and interacting with my family's culture has exposed me to many opportunities where I have grown linguistically and gained knowledge of many cultural aspects. I am half Honduran and half Chinese, and during my childhood, I took trips to my parents' hometowns. During these family visits, I immersed myself in different cultures and was able to practice my language skills while learning how customs differ from those in the United States. One trip I found very valuable to my understanding of cultural differences and culture shock was when I went to China when I was around 13. Before this, I didn't have as many memorable memories of China, and I was actually able to utilize the Chinese I had learned at home in a real-world setting. In addition to this, my first trip to Honduras when I was in elementary school helped enlighten me on the realization that I grew up very privileged while those in developing countries don't have access to the resources that we have in the United States. Overall, my experience visiting and interacting with my multicultural family has augmented my understanding of global culture and has substantially prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP.
The type of person that I would want living down the hall from me is someone friendly, responsible, and with who I am comfortable around. This individual would be outgoing, have a good sense of humor, and be willing to socialize and make everyone feel welcome. Personality-wise, I would prefer someone considerate and respectful of others, especially in terms of noise and cleanliness in shared areas; furthermore, they would understand how to balance being social and inclusive while valuing privacy and personal space. Academically, they would be serious about their studies and motivated to improve. I would love to have a dormmate that would be up to studying together, sharing notes, and supporting each other academically. In addition, I would like to live near someone with a regular sleep schedule and maintain healthy habits. It would be great if they were open to trying new activities/attending events, or even exploring the local area. In general, the ideal person to live down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP would be someone kind, respectful, responsible, academically focused, and has the willingness to balance socializing and personal time.
I want to be part of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder as I am highly interested in expanding my knowledge of cultural and linguistic communities in Boulder and globally. Due to my prospective courseload, I couldn't minor in a language, so I would like to use the Global Engineering RAP to continue my studies in language and culture while tying it into the aspects of global issues. Although I do not plan on studying to be or train as an engineer, I believe this residential community will better prepare me for my interests after college. I am a computer science major and have always been interested in how this field ties into bioscience and medical treatments; I believe this program will help me gain a stronger understanding of global issues that may tie into health and technology. As a person, I plan to contribute to this residential community by not only sharing the knowledge that I have acquired but also expanding on being an active member through event participation, support of other students academically and in personal ways, as well as being someone that the community can rely on to provide assistance complete assignments/tasks.
