Since my parents immigrated from Japan, I frequently visit there (almost every year). During my time in Japan, I experience a completely different culture and environment. From the urban atmosphere of Tokyo to the rural setting in Kumamoto, I am privileged to see the unique aspects of Japan and its culture. For example, I'm always excited to try all of Japan's delicious food. It has a wide variety: sushi, ramen, tonkatsu, or unagi, to name a few. The food that my grandparents make is fantastic as well.
I am also always grateful for being able to communicate with people from entirely different countries. Each person has their own unique experiences. For example, it is always fun to talk to my cousins about their experiences growing up in Japan and compare it to mine.
My Japanese background has prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP because it has expanded my perspective outside just one community/environment. I have connections to two different cultures, and I am aware of their differences. I have been a part of multiple diverse communities because of this, such as the unique community at my Japanese school. I have learned to connect with a wide variety of people. Being involved with culture and community is a point of emphasis in the Global Engineering RAP. Constantly being crossed between cultures will also allow me to be more open-minded toward other communities. This trait will enable me to further understand the global issues the program works toward solving. Although I have yet to learn and experience more about global communities, being Japanese-American has allowed me to take one step toward using engineering to help those around the world.

I would want to live down the hall from someone who strongly values their own work, their commitment to service, and the sense of community at the Global Engineering residence hall.
From this person, I want to be inspired by their involvement in work outside of the classroom. The person is a good student in the classroom, but they also work hard to apply the engineering knowledge they gain from lectures to the Global Engineering research projects. Even with little experience as an undergraduate, they still push themselves to face engineering problems at the frontier of innovation. For instance, they work passionately in moving forward with the DRIP system for the Drought Emergency project. Within these activities, this person always tries to take the initiative as a leader. They are bold enough to step up even if it makes them uncomfortable.
Outside of their own work, this person always makes sure to carve out time for others. Creating a solid and supportive community is one of their most important values. They make sure to be friendly toward everyone in the residence hall and engage in as many community events as possible. They are quick to make friends. By living down the hall from this person and being constantly exposed to their greatness, I want to grow into someone like them. I want to make an impact on global engineering issues and become a positive influence on the community as well.

The Global Engineering RAP at CU would allow me to take a significant step in immersing myself in engineering. During my undergraduate engineering career, I want to be involved in relevant engineering issues to prepare to become an innovative engineer. Global Engineering RAP would be the perfect way for me to start doing this immediately. I am presented with many opportunities both in and out of the classroom. The opportunities that RAP presents are unlike typical research or internship opportunities too. The research projects involve doing engineering work to help those in developing countries directly.
By involving myself with Global Engineering, I will also become more aware of global issues. I’ve always wanted to get hands-on engineering experience. RAP will enable me to do that while also making me a more conscious engineer. As a result, I can get a head start in truly becoming an engineer who seeks innovative solutions to improve people’s quality of life.
The emphasis on culture and community connects with me as well. I am interested in exploring other cultures and communities when working with global engineering. The communal and residential aspects of the program also connect me with other engineering students easily. I perform at my best when surrounded by like-minded, ambitious individuals. The constant exposure to elite-level students in RAP who are passionate about helping those in need would elevate me not only as a student but as a person.
I plan to become a positive influence on the community at RAP. I have always worked hard in the classroom and plan to continue my work ethic at CU. Additionally, I want to take advantage of the research projects in the global engineering program. I am particularly interested in the focus on sustainable WASH systems. It would be great to work with other students, faculty, and partners on sustainable services and infrastructure of WASH systems. I also plan to contribute my unique perspectives to the Global Engineering community while learning about the views of other students and faculty.
Global Engineering RAP is a unique way for me to serve those in need while expanding my undergraduate engineering experience. I will also be introduced to the fascinating field of global engineering through this process.
