I have always been a person who has wanted to travel and explore the world. I am extremely interested in doing the study abroad program through CU Boulder to really experience the world outside the US. In my sophomore year of high school, I tried to go to Germany and Switzerland, but that trip was canceled due to COVID. This summer I am going to London and Italy with my family to explore some of Europe. I am a person who is passionate about traveling and wants to take as many opportunities as I can. Those are all future plans, throughout my past, I have only gotten the opportunity to travel in the US, but I did get the exciting chance to explore Washington DC with my school a couple of years ago. This experience was a truly immersive one, we went to countless museums and walked all over the city. We went to places like the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the National Air and Space Museum, the Capitol, the Pentagon, and so much more. But the sights that had the most impact on me were the Vietnam Memorial and the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Seeing all of the names of people that were lost because of the Vietnam War was heart wrenching. Furthermore, I think the most silent place in the world is the Holocaust Museum, you could almost hear everyone’s heartbeat and see the sadness in their eyes. At each and every historical location, there were words and quotes from different people all over the world and their points of view. At the Holocaust Museum, you would get a profile of a person that lived through the holocaust and you would hear their story. It was hard to hear what some people had to do or who they had to lose in order to survive. There was so much culture spread throughout each and every museum and memorial. Through this trip, my eyes were opened and I learned what it means to look at something through multiple perspectives. Everyone sees something differently and it is important to always take that into consideration, especially when working with a team. I believe this is a big aspect of the Global Engineering RAP. Being able to hear about the different experiences from around the world and working with the people around you to help solve them. The only way to have a global impact is through collaboration and being able to look at something from different points of view is the best way to problem-solve and communicate.
I believe that small amounts of kindness can go a long way. Always willing to try your best to help out the people around you no matter how small the favor. This is the type of person I want to live down the hall from me. Whether it’s something as small as needing to borrow laundry detergent or just needing someone to talk to, I want to be able to go down the hall and have someone I can trust. I want someone who genuinely cares about the people around them. Someone who believes that reaching out and being there for people can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Not only that but I want someone I can turn to for guidance and help, someone who is truly dedicated to their education and wants more than just a good grade, they want to make an impact. This person believes in making a difference whether it’s through their education or through being a helping hand. This person doesn’t have to be my best friend, but having someone I can trust no matter what the situation is, is really crucial to me. Having a person who is there to help me is really important when moving into a new environment, it makes you feel like you’re not totally alone. Everyone in college is trying to make their way through a new place and it is really meaningful to have those people you can always trust in your back corner.
I am extremely passionate about the world around me and engineering. This is something that I want to bring to the Global Engineering RAP and I want to be alongside people who have the same passions. For me, engineering is so much more than something I can just study, it is something that I can use to make a difference in the world. Behind each system, building, road, bridge, water system, etc., there is some type of engineer. Many of the less developed countries struggle with a lot of these types of systems and I believe that being in the Global Engineering RAP I can learn more about the problems different people around the world face and then tackle them to try and find a solution. I am also extremely interested in global warming and the environment and each and every engineering field can do something to help the impact of engineering on the earth. There are millions of problems that engineers can help solve. But no one can do it alone, it requires a community of people working together towards a common goal. Being in the Global Engineering RAP would give me the opportunity to work with people who have the same goals in order to make the world better piece by piece. Everyone has different ideas and viewpoints and having a team and a community of people who are willing to listen to each and every perspective is how the best outcome comes to life. I want to get more out of my education and the best way to do that is through collaboration. I feel I can bring a new perspective, passion, curiosity, and open mind to the Global Engineering RAP.
