Throughout my life, I have traveled to some of the world's biggest cities. Places such as Istanbul, Mumbai, Lisbon, Barcelona, Mexico City, and Bermuda broadened my perspective as a citizen of the world.
Having traveled to many of these regions at a young age, I exposed myself to cultural and social standards far different than those in the US. As a result, I’ve grown accustomed to meeting people from all around the world and through my interactions with them, my ability to connect with diverse people and communities has influenced my perception of engineering in terms of having a global impact. Not only have I gained familiarity with their lifestyles, but an understanding of their struggles and accomplishments. I’ve experienced how students from foreign countries learn multiple languages to communicate with each other, a skill neglected in our country's education system.
My time overseas has made me reflect on my experiences growing up in the US, and the environmental disparities that we face as a nation. I recognize the similarities between these challenges to those in the US: issues with carbon emissions, overpopulation, clean water, etc. The most prominent example of overpopulation and excessive carbon emissions was evident when I visited India. I noticed a pattern of an excessive amount of gas powered cars producing dangerous amounts of carbon in relation to overpopulated cities. I’ve learned that collaborating on a global level is the most effective way to address inaccessibility to resources and economic disparities through engineered solutions.
As I transition into my next stage as an adult, I would hope to be introduced to a variety of students while I stay at Kittredge. Due to my experiences overseas and time spent meeting people from all over the world, I would like to be surrounded by individuals coming from a variety of backgrounds sharing their cultural traditions and customs. In particular, I would like to connect with a student who is willing to try new foods and take advantage of the community kitchen. In addition, I would like to meet students who are interested in exploring the Rocky Mountains, especially since I have a passion for skiing and snowboarding.
As someone who enjoys spending time with a smaller, tight-knit community, I would appreciate the opportunity to establish relationships with a student who not only shares similar interests in TV shows and videogames, but also someone who can expose me to new hobbies and pieces of media that I otherwise wouldn’t have discovered. I hope to exchange our experiences and traditions in an effort to create a more open environment enabling us to collaborate greater as engineers. I believe that this environment encourages broader learning and helps us build a network allowing us more opportunities both on and off the Colorado Boulder campus.
Being a member of the Global Engineering RAP, I will be learning in a collaborative environment with a diverse set of engineers and leaders. I’ve always been interested in the prospect of studying abroad and possibly exploring a future in working abroad and by living in an entirely new place I’ll be exposed to different languages, customs, and architecture that fascinates me. My ambition and curiosity has driven me to pursue this program which will allow me to not only grow as an engineer but as a person, particularly as a team-oriented engineer. The chance to have access to job opportunities outside the US was a particular draw, as I collaborated with other future engineers, to address global problems. I will gain skills as a leader in my field and contribute to an environment that fosters an inclusive and active community.
I will contribute an active voice representing not only my cultural background, but a voice representative of the diverse community I grew up in. Coming from a port town in Los Angeles, I am familiar with health disparities as a product of economic inequality and environmental degradation. Though this first-hand experience, coupled with my internal motivation and perseverance to solve the issues that have been affecting my community, and many others across the globe, I will apply the knowledge I’ve learned in the unique curriculum, as well as form authentic connections with my peers.
