'Only When It's Funny': Free Speech and the Arts

The question of legal restrictions on artistic expression has long been debated, but the question of private censorship in the arts is much less well understood.

What might such private censorship look like? Does it exist? If so, in what direction does it flow, what are its consequences, and how might it be prevented? Drawing on his experience as a university lecturer and founder and CEO of Passage Press, Jonathan Keeperman will argue that private censorship in the arts is a pervasive and urgent problem whose ultimate solution is the development of independent and non-monopolistic creative economies.

100 New Thinkers and Experts on International Relations includes Benson Center Fellow

Benson Center Faculty Fellow Benjamin Teitelbaum named by Radio France as one of the 100 new thinkers and experts in international relations.

Benjamin Teitelbaum is an ethnomusicologist and a scholar of extreme right-wing movements, especially in Europe and North America. A professor at the University of Colorado, he is the author of War for Eternity, which analyzes the influence of traditionalist ideas on contemporary political figures like Steve Bannon. Its work focuses on political radicalization, cultural identities and their impact on international relations.
