I am a Haitian born adoptee from Kansas City, MO, where there is a slightly higher population of black folk than in Boulder, Colorado. Given my double majors of International Affairs and Spanish, I ventured towards the political arena, determined to find my role in getting black women elected. In the fall of 2016, I took a semester off to work for Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Campaign in Cleveland, OH. For the first time in my life, I felt a connection, a sense of belonging that I had been seeking for twenty years. In Cleveland, most of the voters, elected officials, and my colleagues were black. Since the campaign, I feel I rarely get the opportunity to discuss being black in America with people who can empathize with me. The good news is, that while I am limited in the racial perspective at university, Professor Kaufman will be able to bring me an unforeseen perspective, that of the conservative, which many of my professors are not. Thankfully, I expect that this program will provide me the opportunity to better prepare myself for the art of educated discourse.
