Students in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) program at the University of Colorado Boulder showcased their senior design projects at the 2026 Engineering Expo, highlighting a year of hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world problem solving.

The annual expo represents the culmination of the BME senior design experience. Throughout the academic year, student teams partner with industry sponsors, clinicians, and researchers to develop solutions addressing critical challenges in healthcare and medical technology. From initial concept development to prototyping and testing, students apply fundamental engineering principles to design and evaluate impactful devices and systems.

This year’s projects reflected the breadth of the biomedical engineering field. Teams explored a diverse range of applications, including wearable health monitoring systems, rehabilitation technologies, diagnostic tools, and innovative drug delivery approaches. Many projects emphasized accessibility, affordability, and usability, ensuring that proposed solutions are both technically robust and viable for real-world implementation.

A defining feature of the 2026 expo was the emphasis on user-centered design. Students engaged directly with stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, and caregivers,to inform and refine their work. This approach reinforced the importance of integrating empathy, communication, and technical expertise in the engineering design process.

In addition to technical development, students gained experience in project management, teamwork, and professional communication. Each team presented its work through poster sessions, live demonstrations, and formal presentations, reflecting the expectations of both industry and research environments.

Faculty mentors and industry partners played a critical role throughout the design process by providing guidance, feedback, and technical insight. Their involvement helped bridge the gap between academic training and professional practice, preparing students for future careers in biomedical engineering and related fields.

The top honor at the 2026 Engineering Expo was awarded to Team Mr I. Team members Rohan Gohil, Cody Campos, Savannah Presson, Breeana Pritchard, Madison Voytko, and Kady Vu were recognized for their outstanding innovation, design quality, and potential impact. Their project distinguished itself among a highly competitive group of senior design teams.

James Long, teaching professor and instructor for the senior design course, emphasized the dedication and growth demonstrated by students throughout the year. “I’m really proud of my students—they are creative and patient, and that has shown on the day of the expo,” he said.

The 2026 Engineering Expo not only celebrated student achievement but also underscored the strength of the BME program in preparing the next generation of engineers. Through innovation, collaboration, and rigorous design practice, students developed solutions with the potential to advance healthcare and improve patient outcomes.
