Serena Leland, M.A.

Serena grew up in the New York metropolitan area and has lived in Boulder, Colorado for the past 21 years. Prior to moving to Colorado, she taught as a Peace Corps English teacher in Kenya, and then spent 7 years living, studying, and working in Washington D.C. She earned a master’s degree in international development from American University’s School of International Service and has a bachelor’s degree in English and a past secondary education teaching certificate.

 

Serena has worked in the education sector for the past 30 years in numerous capacities. She has managed and directed education programs, worked as a senior education research analyst, and served as a teacher and a trainer in a variety of contexts. Some of her professional experiences include working as program director of the CU in D.C. program at CU Boulder; working at Georgetown University’s Center for Intercultural Education & Development; serving as a senior education research analyst for USAID; managing a study abroad program to India; performing as a training facilitator for a university intercultural communication workshop; and working in the training division of an international gender equity nonprofit. Serena’s professional life has had a strong emphasis on social justice issues, equity in education, active learning, intercultural education, and uplifting people so they are able to realize their full human potential.

 

Outside of her professional life, Serena is an avid hiker and loves to tackle outdoor challenges and explore beautiful places. She also enjoys international travel, thrifting and antiquing, knitting and crocheting, and genealogy. When Serena isn’t in the office or on the trails, she loves spending time with her college-aged children.
