Katie Campbell | SA Communications
Katie's nominator said, “I would like to nominate Katie Campbell for the spotlight award for her collaboration with Student Housing. For three weeks, Katie worked closely with me and easily put in many hours to update and revamp the housing portion of the website for all of the 2021-22 housing application processes. When we started the updating, it was just that; however, as we continued through the process and decisions were being made regarding the housing offered in 2021-22 the updates evolved to a whole new look and feel. Katie worked collaboratively with me to make the website student and family friendly. She worked late and last minute, as well as offered insight and suggestions that really supported the direction we were headed. She also was a pleasure to work with and supported us at every turn. While Katie planned to work with us on website updates, she was not planning or expecting this to be the large scale project it ended up being. This nomination is just a small way to show our appreciation and gratitude for the support she gave our unit.” Thank you, Katie!

This project improved the sign-on interface, the usability of the system as a whole, and brought together multiple facilities (some that were not integrated into EMS previously). Their work on implementation directly aligns with the focus of enhancing the student experience in Spring 2021. In addition to enhancing the student experience this spring, this project has laid the ground work for future collaboration and campus-wide use of EMS. Way to go!” Thank you, Mandy!

Jessica Doty | Administrative Services
Jess' nominator said, “Jess Doty is a dedicated, passionate leader in Health and Wellness Services. She brings a strong and quiet presence to leadership meetings. She is a STRONG collaborator. She is committed to figuring things out, good at thinking about the big picture, but not forgetting the details and is a great strategic thinker/planner. She does not shy away from a challenge. She actually takes challenges head on and I think this is not only a strength of hers, she likes to take on tough challenges and we need that in this division and we need to recognize and honor we have this strong leader in on our team. She is a great thought partner for me and probably many others. She is always willing to consult and I appreciate where she challenges and pushes back on me, making me, I hope, a better leader. I can have direct tough conversations, still laugh, and usually end up with a good plan. Thank you Jess for being my colleague and the work you do in the division, she helps keep this complex division running.” Thank you, Jess!

My commitment to Equity, Social Justice, Inclusion, and Student Support are at the core of what I do and what I continue to do in my work. The CDS Team | Campus Dining Services
Their nominator said, “CDS staff, like others, are Essential Services staff. Essential Services staff come to work as scheduled when campus is closed in order to be of service to students and the campus. Although these staff are Essential Services, they went above beyond during the March snowstorm and next days by putting in additional hours and shifts, staying overnight, and/or coming into work when others were not able to do so. Their time, energy and positive presence ensured we had multiple dining options open for students. They worked quickly to adapt operations, food offerings, and staffing due to changing staffing patterns and low inventory when delivery trucks were not able to make the scheduled deliveries. The dedication of all Essential Services staff truly makes a difference for our students and our campus. Going above and beyond -- to stay overnight, to work additional hours, to come in on a day off -- speaks to the commitment of these staff and of CDS. I believe these staff are a representation of the CDS staff as a whole. Thank you to each of these staff for their work -- we are lucky to have all of you at CU Boulder.” Thank you all!

Bruce Sarbaugh | Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations
“Bruce’s expertise in the legal field is incredible to experience, but it’s his dedication to intentional support, care, and education that allow Bruce to excel within his role at CU… Following a meeting with Bruce, we continue to hear from CU students and families that they feel supported and have more confidence in regard to proceeding forward with legal issues. Beyond his meetings with students, Bruce is always the staff member in our office that has a perma-smile, 3 jokes in his back pocket, and the power to turn anyone’s bad day, into a great one. He loves what he does at CU, and continues to make a large positive impact for our students, families, and fellow staff members. I couldn’t be more proud to have Bruce not only be an employee of CU, but an incredible team member within our department.”

Bruce Sarbaugh

Amin Gheyser | HFS
“Amin has directly supported the students living in our resident hall but above all the students in Isolation Spaces… To prevent the negative impact on teamwork performance Amin has filled the void over the last 19 months by performing double duty of two AD level jobs.”

Amin Gheysar

Roxane Ruggles | University Memorial Center
“Roxane doesn’t like the limelight, preferring to work behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smooth. Working with a reduced staff of planners due to furloughs, she spent the summer collaborating with other campus departments to develop plans to meet COVID restrictions, adapt policies, and strategize staffing logistics. When classes began, she ensured the professors were equipped with everything they needed to be successful and for the students to feel safe and comfortable in spaces normally used for meetings and retreats. Roxane finds the bright spot in every challenge and is well deserving of the VC Spotlight award.”

Roxane Ruggles

Stewart Elliott | VMA
“Stew has developed strong, working relationships with community members and campus partners and is frequently thinking opportunities to support student veterans and expand their access to and experience at CU Boulder. Most recently, he secured a $1 million endowment that will provide scholarships for student veterans in the future... I am not sure how Stew would describe what leads to his success. What stands out to me is the clarity of mission and purpose Stew shares with others and Stew's ability to invest in people and relationships for the long-term. Whether the focus is on a student veteran or someone who shares a potential interest in giving, Stew looks to understand the needs and/or interests of the individual.”

This summer, Brie launched Buff Family Webinars and Coffee Hours after months of advocating for these programs to exist... Since May, these two programs - Buff Family Webinars and Buff Family Coffee Hours - have had 2,509 attendees (may include repeat visitors). Families have joined to learn about college for their first college student or their fifth, from in state, out of state, and internationally, and have had hundreds of questions answered. CU's incoming class is more informed, more confident and more connected due to Brie's work."

"Kristina has put over 200 student veterans though VMA Academic Bridge since the program inception in fall 2017. Retention of students after completing this program are over 95% with a first semester average GPA of 3.35. Student testimonials from the VMA Summer 2019 Bridge clearly demonstrate the high value for student veterans that attend this program... Kristina Spaeth is a role model CU Boulder staff member who exemplifies all the best values of our CU Boulder campus community. Kristina's continued outstanding performance in the execution of VMA Academic Bridge and VMA Academic Advising clearly warrant the awarding of the Division of Student Affairs VC Spotlight Award."

Kristina Spaeth

Bella Cotton | Housing Administration
"I would like to nominate Bella Cotton for her endless support and assistance of Housing and Dining Services. Bella is in a role that often exists behind the scenes, making sure our systems work... Bella has been an unseen and often unrecognized shining star this summer to ensure that processes and operations to support our students can actually occur. We see the seamless results of her work, but what we don't see are the countless hours and hard work she puts in on the back end, because Bella does all of this quietly. She is an unassuming leader, and a thank you is just not nearly enough for all she has given to us all."

She did this without being asked and well before broad virtual programming discussions began. As the fitness coordinator, she has added several new skills to her repertoire including IT wizard, Zoom aficionado, video director and more. It has not been an easy transition, but Annie took the lead, continues to ride the virtual highs and lows and provide a good product to the CU community. We appreciate all of your hard work and dedication!"

Jessica has been extremely responsive to requests for data, has been critical in her thought process, ensuring always to provide more than what is expressly asked... Jessica has certainly gone above and beyond in general, but especially within these last few months when it has been needed most."

Dave is a STAR employee because he always conducts his work with a smile on his face, in the best interest of students and never, ever complains about hard work.
