Q sense

Q-SEnSE (Quantum Systems through Entangled Science & Engineering) is a Quantum Physics Research Institute focused on solving the most important "quantum leap" challenges in sensing and measurement.

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Q-SEnSE is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado and operates within JILA (Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics) at the University of Colorado Boulder.

We bring together scientists, engineers, and institutions across the United States and internationally to push the boundaries of quantum discovery and transform fundamental science into practical technologies.

Q-SEnSE: An NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute

Our Mission

We are committed to creating a collaborative and inclusive environment where researchers and institutions can pursue ambitious quantum projects with the potential for major scientific and societal impact.

Our work focuses on advancing fundamental discovery while translating quantum science into tools that shape the future of technology.

Our Community

Partner organizations combining expertise across academia, government, and industry.

~30 Collaborating Institutions

Scientists, engineers, and researchers across physics, engineering, and chemistry working together on quantum challenges.

Internationally recognized scientists tackling the next generation of quantum challenges.

Our Three Grand Challenges

  1. We leverage quantum advantage to perform measurements with precision that classical tools cannot achieve. Key research areas include Dark Matter Detection using quantum sensing techniques, and Quantum Simulators connecting theory and experiment through controlled simulation.

  2. We bridge the gap between discovery and real-world implementation by applying engineering principles to quantum research. Key outputs include ultra-precise atomic clocks, distributed navigation sensors, and deployable prototype systems.

  3. Our goal is to prepare quantum components for transition into industry and large-scale manufacturing. This includes standardized performance metrics, scalable quantum components, and supporting startups and industry partners.

These efforts drive the transition from Quantum 1.0 discovery to Quantum 2.0 industrial deployment.

NSF Q-SEnSE is funded by the generous support of the National Science Foundation through its Quantum Leap Challenge Institute program.
