Recommended Identity-Thomas Barrett

Film 3:02

The project critiques how constant exposure to algorithm-driven content can influence behavior, taste, and self-perception, raising questions about individuality and control in a system designed to predict and shape who we become.

I'm a creative producer working across film, photography, and emerging media, with a focus on visual storytelling and immersive experiences. My work often explores identity, technology, and the ways digital environments shape how we see ourselves and others. I have experience with video production, editing, and drone cinematography, and I enjoy experimenting with new tools and formats to push creative ideas further. I’m interested in telling stories that feel both personal and reflective of larger cultural shifts happening around us.

This project is a short experimental film that explores how algorithmic recommendations slowly begin to shape identity. It follows a character moving through their everyday routine, where subtle suggestions start to appear, what to listen to, wear, eat, and create. At first, these recommendations feel helpful and normal, but they gradually become more intrusive, guiding decisions without question. As the film progresses, the character begins to lose a sense of personal choice, adopting things that are suggested to them. By the end, the character finds themselves unable to recognize themselves, what they are wearing, or where they are.
