Material Girl - Noya Kinsland
Photography
Two 16x20 portraits, two 16x24 portraits, four audio interviews
A series of faceless portraits and interviews, Material Girl explores the relationship between women and their personal objects. This series investigates how material objects serve to represent a woman's identity and the metaphysical value we place on material objects.
A series of faceless portraits, Material Girl explores the relationship between women and their personal objects. This series captures the meaningful items that we carry with us through our lives, depicted in a collage, flat lay style. Material Girl also investigates the idea of personal archives and memory, asking why we keep and value these specific material belongings. With the involvement of four subjects–women I know and love–Material Girl also highlights the metaphysical, sentimental value we place on these material objects. Material Girl is an attempt at bringing the intangible to the tangible. Each portrait is accompanied by an audio interview, allowing for a deeper understanding of each subject’s personal identity. This project aims to shed light on the power of personal possessions in shaping who we are, as well as to appreciate the uniqueness of each relationship I have with the women close to me.
