Students may choose from several hospitals in the Boulder/Denver area that CU Boulder’s Sociology Department in conjunction with CU Denver’s College of Nursing and the State of Colorado's Preventions Services Division will organize as internship sites.  Boulder Community Hospital and Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver have already agreed to serve as sites.  Interns will be trained as lay patient navigators who connect patients and their families with the basic resources they need to be healthy.  Doctors “prescribe” resources such as food, housing and heating assistance – just as they do medication.  Patients take their prescriptions to the clinic waiting room, where student interns help “fill” them by connecting patients to community services.  Other internship opportunities involving organizations and agencies focused on disaster relief are also being developed. Should students know of still other sites where they would like to intern, these will be considered as well.
