What Postdocs Can Do About Broken Commitments and Bad Behavior

Workplace discussions

Offered by the Office of Faculty Affairs, Crucial Accountability is a new two-day workshop that will teach postdocs how to hold discussions when the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. These conversations—when handled poorly or ignored—lead to strained relationships and missed opportunities.

The course will occur Tuesday, July 30 and Thursday, August 1, 2019, from 8 am to 5 pm each day. The sessions are open to anyone who works in an academic capacity—academic and research faculty, administrators, postdocs, graduate students, and staff.

The Crucial Accountability two-day training teaches participants how to:

  • Speak persuasively, not abrasively.
  • Hold anyone accountable—no matter the person’s power, position, or temperament.
  • Master performance discussions—get positive results and maintain good relationships.
  • Motivate others without using power—clearly and concisely explain specific, natural consequences, and permanently resolve problems.
  • Foster open dialogue—creatively help others avoid excuses, keep projects/tasks on track, and resolve performance barriers.
  • Move to action—agree on a plan, follow up, engage in good reporting practices, and manage new expectations.

Course Costs

The course fee is $275 and includes a Crucial Accountability Toolkit, cue cards for each lesson, Crucial Accountability model card, copy of the New York Times bestselling book Crucial Accountability, the Crucial Accountability audio companion download, and a course completion certificate. Staff in the Office of Faculty Affairs are certified trainers for this course, which results in a significant discount on the course fee.
