John is proud to have been raised in the Driftless Region of Wisconsin where the bluffs, coulees, ridgetops and rivers were his playgrounds. These experiences led John to the University of Minnesota, where he earned his BA in Elementary Education. During the summers, John discovered Colorado, where he fell in love with the river and all water sports - ultimately leading him to a rafting and kayaking career that took him around the world. After years of guiding and training new guides, John decided to continue his education at Prescott College, where he earned his MA in Outdoor Education Leadership. These experiences led him to The Crest Academy, a project based middle school in Salida, Colorado. He is in his third year of teaching science and loving the opportunity to connect student learning to the natural world. During his free time, John enjoys fishing on the Arkansas River, hiking in the mountains, and spending quality time with his partner and dog.
