Sometimes it is difficult to slow down in our busy day and check ourselves: do our actions align with our values?
Think about the times you might have witnessed a microaggression, a thinly-veiled derogatory comment against yourself or someone else regarding innate factors of personal identity. Did this happen in a store or restaurant... on a public bus... or in a classroom or office on campus? When it happened, did you speak up? Did you feel equipped to respond in the situation? Do you ever get to debrief about these kinds of interactions, or discuss what might have been done differently? What if you could?
Individuals across our CU Boulder community who are interested in making excellence inclusive are invited to attend ODECE's open Inclusive Communities of Practice (ICoP) sessions. These are 90-minute meetings organized around a topic related to diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, and human interaction. These conversations are meant to be “brave spaces” where faculty, staff and students can talk honestly about areas of concern and practice techniques for making excellence inclusive in your everyday lived experiences.
ODECE's Inclusive Communities of Practice (ICoP) are organized to specifically relate to teaching and learning (pedagogy) practices, and workplace practices, respectively.
We've been hosting these sessions since the Fall of 2017 and welcome guest presenters or guest topic facilitators. We often draw on topics that are inspired by ODECE's nationally-known expert practitioners from our Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop series.

Upcoming Meetings for Fall 2019
8 Sessions: All take place in CASE W313 from 10:30-noon unless otherwise noted
9/9 Equity and High Impact Practices (10:30-noon, Meets in Rec Center Middle Meeting Room)
Description: Come explore the equity component to High Impact Practices (HIPs) for education! Whether you are new to HIPs or are already hip to HIPs, this session will help participants identify and articulate how HIPs are connected to equity. We’ll explore how HIPs are associated with disproportionately positive outcomes for students from low-income and historically underserved backgrounds. We’ll look at examples of how HIPs can benefit students holistically across their student experience. Lastly, we’ll engage in a discussion of how equity can become a more ingrained lens for all kinds of learning experiences through a few easily applied tactics.
9/23 Mindful mentorship best practices
Description: Who do you mentor? By whom are you mentored? In this session we will discuss mentoring scenarios from the perspectives of the mentor and mentee, to consider how we can get the most out of these formative relationships. We will discuss how we can attend to potential issues of equity and inclusion, as well as take time to plan for our future mentoring interactions. This session is open to students, faculty, and staff from all corners of the university.
10/7 Effective feedback for students
Description: How do students know that they are on track to meet the learning goals for your course? In this session we will discuss why it is important to give students feedback during the learning process, when to time this feedback for the most student impact, and how to give effective feedback while attending to possible issues of equity and inclusion. This work session is targeted for anyone who gives feedback to students, or who wants to learn and practice research-validated strategies for giving feedback within the workplace.
10/21 Inclusive meetings—best practices
Description: Join us for a conversation about ways we might create environments in campus meetings that encourage differing thoughts and opinions, a sense of belonging and participation from all attendees. Discuss the ways that meetings can be more inclusive, beginning in the planning stages, guidelines for during the meeting, norms of collaboration, and meeting activities. Come prepared to share ideas, problem-solve current meeting issues and learn ways to make excellence inclusive in our meeting spaces.
11/4 Gender dynamics in STEM/Research environments
Description: Gain awareness of and the ability to interrupt sexism in research and creative environments on campus and beyond so that these high-impact spaces are empowering places for women and members of the LGBTQ community.
11/18 Habits of inclusion for classroom culture
Description: Join us as we share effective practices for creating and sustaining an inclusive learning environment for everyone. We’ll start out with an exemplar syllabus statement and encourage you to think about how to improve your own syllabi. We’ll then examine a few key practices, share extensive resources, and engage in discussion to mine the expertise in the room.
12/2 Mindful, Inclusive Mentorship (building on our session from 9/23)
Description: In our first mentorship session on September 23, we talked through some challenging mentoring scenarios with an implicit equity and inclusion lens (access here). In this follow up session, we will spend time on the “mindful” part of effective mentoring. How can we attend to equity and inclusion as a mentor? What does it mean for a mentor to be inclusive? We welcome participants from the first “mindful mentoring” session, as well as students, faculty, and staff from all corners of the University of Colorado community.
