Five-year Effort

  • The work of the Committee of the Inclusion, Diversity and Excellence in Academics (IDEA) Plan is now complete, having built on a five-year effort (2015-2019), driven by ODECE, on making excellence inclusive. Inclusive excellence remains a focus theme of Academic Futures' implementation for the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • The committee made great use of the more than 90+ Inclusive Excellence narratives that the campus created in 2015-2016, and which ODECE collected and summarized.

Campus Resources

  • Beginning in 2016-2017, ODECE initiated an Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop series to highlight expert practices in making excellence inclusive, thereby beginning to address the top request (for increased resources) from the Inclusive Excellence narratives.
  • Ongoing inclusive communities of practice, facilitated by ODECE, launched in 2017 and 2018, focusing on best practices in classroom and workplace environmentsy; these dialogue-oriented sessions are open to all students, faculty and staff.
  • The new Center for Teaching and Learning will take over ODECE's inclusive pedagogy workshops and communities of practice facilitation starting in the fall of 2020.

Authoring the Plan

  • In 2018, the authoring committee of the Inclusion, Diversity and Excellence in Academics (IDEA) Plan was charged by VC Boswell with creating a continuously renewing blueprint of action designed to promote diversity, improve equity for all people underrepresented in the campus community, and engage our community in continuous reflection and action to support making excellence inclusive at all levels.
  • After a year and a half of writing, revising, and engaging with the campus community for feedback, the revised IDEA Plan was received by the chancellor's cabinet and published on Oct. 30th, 2019.
