We encourage all of campus to engage in the following One Read: an article by Brian Arao and Kristi Clemens titled "From Safe Spaces to Brave Spaces: A New Way to Frame Dialogue Around Diversity and Social Justice" (2013). The concept of "brave space" will be useful in many of this Summit's sessions and beyond, which is why the Diversity and Inclusion Summit Planning Committee felt that this text would be an excellent One Read for CU Boulder. By drawing on the same anchor text, we will be able to deepen our conversations as we continue to "build the road map" together. In recommending this piece as a One Read, our intention is to prepare campus for the work of "finding our way" and create space for people to speak their minds in civil dialogue. Diversity and inclusion require that we learn to take risks and be brave by stepping outside of our comfort zones to hear the words of those who are different from us. Note: This brave effort also requires that we pay attention to power differentials on campus. We would like to ask members of campus to read this piece and participate as they are able to in Summit conversations, while remaining cognizant of the sensitive nature of topics that may come up, and without creating an atmosphere of fear and subsequent retaliation.
