The Energy Master Plan is a vision and roadmap for the campus for years to come. It is an adaptable framework for a financially sustainable energy program that focuses on energy-intensity reduction goals, supports meeting the carbon-reduction goals of the campus and provides reliable, low-carbon and resilient energy sources that enable and enhance the campus mission of education and research. The plan supports the campus greenhouse gas reduction goals of 30 percent reduction in the energy use intensity in campus buildings by 2035, as well as a shift to 100 percent by 2050. It also defines energy conservation, efficiency and reduction goals; identifies renewable energy objectives and strategies; and defines energy resiliency objectives related to buildings and the utility systems at CU Boulder.

The EMP document informed the approved 2021 Campus Master Plan, which includes an overarching set of principles for how the university approaches energy, as well as recommended options to be integrated during the Campus Master Plan efforts.
