This is a stipend-supported internship for Spring 2024. Students will also have the option to receive credit for the internship through LGBTQ Studies. Students will be expected to intern 10 hours per week during the semester. They will receive a $2000 stipend upon completing their hours. Funds have been generously provided through the Thomas R. Stephens Support Fund.

Any CU Boulder undergraduate student with a 2.0 GPA and 30 hours of credit may apply for LGBTQ Studies Internships. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the Undergraduate Certificate in LGBTQ Studies. Please note that you must be enrolled at CU Boulder the semester that the internship takes place.

Program Summary:

OASOS LGBTQ interns participate as peer-educators in the OASOS program.

Description of Work:

OASOS WGS interns attend youth groups to support the development of positive adult relationships with LGBTQ+ community members. Intern opportunities are as follows:

  • Develop educational materials for the OASOS Instagram @OASOSNetwork – including activist history, mental health activities, resources, etc.
  • Support with the OASOS Newsletter
  • Develop lesson plans and educational materials for Middle and High School GSA advisors and youth leaders
  • Attend GSA meetings in BVSD and SVVSD with the OASOS School Support Specialist
  • Participate in activities such as tabling at community events to increase awareness of OASOS.
  • Develop an activity for Pride tabling for summer 2024.
  • Develop and lead peer-education activities in Queer & Trans (QTs) social support group on Thursdays from 4:15 – 6:30 p.m, or Youth Advocating for Change on Mondays from 5:00 – 7:30 pm

Training, Experience, and Benefits Gained:

  • Training will include information about social justice youth development, anti-oppressive philosophy, and methods for facilitating conversations with young people.
  • Interns will acquire knowledge in adolescent development, oppression, anti-racism, as well as skills in one-on-one counseling, crisis counseling, group facilitation, and program development and operation.

Supervision: 

  • This position will be supervised by the OASOS Program Manager.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  None required.
Experience: 

  • Experience working with the LGBTQ+ community.            
  • The OASOS Program works significantly from a mentorship model; therefore, qualified candidates will have shared experience in what OASOS youth (LGBTQ+  youth) are going through.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with questioning, transgender, bisexual, lesbian, intersex, two-spirit, and gay youth.
  • Dedication to uplifting intersectional marginalized voices, including Black, Indigenous and other people of color.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with volunteers, staff, community organizations, and community members.  
  • Knowledge of information surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Comfort working with adolescents.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) language skills are preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Interns must pass a fingerprint background check facilitated and paid for by BCPH.
  • Must submit immunization history form and immunization documentation.  Some immunizations (e.g., COVID-19 vaccine) and/or tuberculosis (TB) tests may be required (at the expense of BCPH), and volunteer/intern must comply with these requirements prior to start date.
