Andres Chaparro Sosa
Andres Felipe Chaparro Sosa

Andres was born in 1993 and grew up in Bogota, Colombia. He graduated in May 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University (MSU). At MSU, Andres worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant under the supervision of Dr. Keisha Walters, in her Polymer and Surface Engineering Laboratory. There, he performed research on the development of a nanocomposite based on pH-responsive and magnetic nanoparticles for possible applications for the removal of heavy metals, corrosion resistance, and the inhibition and removal of bacteria. Additionally, Andres worked with pyrolysis oil to determine its aging mechanisms and stability, as well as to find effective ways to remove char particulates in the pyrolysis oil.
At the University of Colorado, Andres is a member of the Kaar and Schwartz labs. Through this collaboration, Andres uses protein engineering techniques along with single molecule (SM) total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) techniques to study protein-surface interactions, and their effects on protein activity and stability.
Finally, in his free time, Andres enjoys dancing, hiking, climbing, as well as playing different sports such as Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Ultimate.
