Course Topics

Data mining is a growing field of research at the nexus of computer science and statistics. With the advent of the Internet and remote sensing, the challenges of manipulating and learning from “big data” have taken an increasingly prominent role in modern research. This short course will cover the fundamentals of the statistical aspects of data mining, from regression and classification to clustering and neural networks. Students should expect to leave the course with a broad understanding of the tools of statistical learning, along with a handful of references for the application of more advanced methods.
