Elizabeth "Zee" Travis
Elizabeth (Zee) Travis received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in Biochemistry and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and earned her master’s degree in Environmental Engineering. She is part of the Engineering for Developing Communities (EDC) certificate program and also completed an interdisciplinary certificate program in Environment, Policy, and Society. As part of the EDC certificate program she traveled to Iquitos, Peru, where she helped conduct a monitoring and evaluation project assessing the effectiveness of various community water treatment plants through water quality testing and household surveys. As part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Reinvent the Toilet Challenge team she worked on creating a low maintenance and sustainable odor control module for treating fecal pyrolysis exhaust. Her research involved quantifying the odor and hydrogen sulfide released during fecal pyrolysis, and looking at the ability of char created using fecal biomass for the treatment of hydrogen sulfide and odor. She is particularly interested in WASH, development policy, microbiology, water resource development, and water reuse and is currently working with AGUAInc. in The Gambia.
