The Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences received a $7.5-million-dollar grant from the Department of Defense that spans over five years. This grant will mainly be appropriated towards research for the military regarding turbulence and particles at high altitude using weather balloons – particularly between 80,000 and 120,000 feet (where hypersonic planes operate). The data collected will be geared towards constructing aerodynamically sound planes that can interact with the turbulence and particles without being damaged or destroyed.
