Reflections From 25 Years as a Faculty Member (and a few from life before that)

Education

  • Education starts with the liberal arts.  The ability to speak, critically think, and write are the building blocks of every other domain.  Never overlook the value of the basics - they never go out of style or become obsolete.
  • Learn a second language.
  • Major in what you are passionate about.  Money follows passion - happiness drives success.
  • The best teacher is the one that tells you there is room to improve.

Academia

  • Ethics can be very questionable when it comes to getting grants - know what your line is and don't cross it.
  • Teaching is a part of academia and it is important to love teaching as much as research.  If you don't, then work for a research institute.
  • Academia is a 365 days-a-year job.  Know that before you get into it.
  • Academics have value - don't let others tell you otherwise.
  • A teacher makes a difference in students' lives - always remember that.

Consulting

  • The most important skill to have as a consultant is the ability to talk about anything.  The client assumes you have technical knowledge, be able to talk about whatever the client is interested in.
  • If you don't like hotel rooms and airports, this is not the life for you.
  • Always be prepared to answer things that may come up, even if they seem irrational.  Thinking on your feet is the best strength a consultant can have.
  • Always be the one to listen.  The less you speak, the more you learn.

Above all else - always remember that it is your life to live. Love what you do, find your passion, and make a plan.  You may not be able to control life, but you can at least set a path to follow.  Success is how you define it.
