CU-Boulder was awarded an astonishing $359 million in research funding in 2011. It is the No. 1 NASA-funded public university.

While funding incredible research, that money comes with restrictions and cannot be used for the university’s operating costs. For instance, there are 49 buildings in need of maintenance on campus, totaling $300 million in repairs, but the campus only has $4 million budgeted to spend on the upkeep annually.
