Journalism

Andy Sturt is a PhD student in Journalism Studies. He holds a Master of Science degree from Temple University in sport business with an emphasis on marketing. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Art in communication degree from University of Colorado Denver, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and an Associate of Arts from Red Rocks Community College.

Andy’s primary research interest is auto-ethnographic digital storytelling through social media, specifically Instagram (where you should follow him @WhatWhatAndy), as an emerging new lens of journalism. Over the past two summers, his research has taken him to 13 countries. For his master’s project on Major League Baseball fan experience, he drove to all 30 MLB stadiums, over 30,000 miles, through 43 states, and stopped at 23 National Parks. Through sharing his journey on social media and his blog, AndySaidWhat.com, he received a bevy of recognition—both domestic and international—with over 150 stories done on him in nine countries.

Additionally, his Instagram account (@WhatWhatAndy) “blew up” and he gained over 75,000 followers! Want to know more? Check out one this Fox evening news story or this in-game Miami Marlins!

No matter where his travel takes him, Colorado is home, and he considers that to be an important part of his narrative. As such, he is thrilled to be back home—at CU Boulder—pursuing his doctoral degree.

Additional research interests include: travel communication, photojournalism, critical cultural studies, communication and sport, emojis, obscenity/vulgarity in popular culture, and a whole bevy of other fun stuff.
