Join us in Communication

My name is Tiara Na'puti and I’m an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI).

I'm excited to be a new faculty member at CMCI because of the dynamic centers and the opportunities to do diversity work and engage communication in other disciplines. I was a first-generation college student and my family is from the Pacific Island territory of Guam. Much of my work is focused on issues in U.S. territories. I love exploring the ways communication spans the world and finding opportunities to foster communication among diverse and under-heard groups.

Both in class, and through a center within the Department of Communication, I work with students to engage with the community and think about under-heard populations and groups who may not always have a role in decision making. Many of our projects are centered on finding ways to bring communication skills from the classroom into the community, and it’s exciting to hear students’ perspectives and help them develop solutions to issues they’re invested in.

Communication acts as a bridge between other disciplines, which is why CMCI’s model—bringing together students and faculty from various departments to collaborate and learn with one another—creates an ideal environment for this work. I hope you’ll apply to CMCI and join us this fall!

"I’m a senior here studying communication with a minor in leadership. I thought I’d combine these two subjects to be able to understand people’s stories and relate them to my own in a way that makes them feel comfortable and me seem like a strong leader.” Easten Pessin (Comm'18)

The College of Media, Communication and Information is uniquely suited to help you study the field of communication.
